Guidelines for Temporary School Closure in Case of H1N1

The guidelines were passed on 1st Sept., 2009, at the University’s 2588 Administrative Meeting

1. In order to prevent the spreading of the H1N1 and to maintain the safety and operation of the campus, the university has set down these guidelines, which are subjected to adjustment in accordance to the flu situation.

2. Faculty, staff, and students diagnosed with influenza A (tested positive for influenza A) should stop coming to work or school for 5 days after falling ill until all symptoms have relieved. Those with flu-like symptoms but not diagnosed with influenza A (tested negative for influenza A or not tested) should not return to the campus until 1 day have passed after the symptoms have dissipated.

3. If, within the time period of 3 days, two or more people from any of their classes and/or their offices/laboratories are diagnosed with influenza A, the instructor should monitor their personal health condition for at least 5 days and should wear a facemask in the classroom.

4. If, within the time period of 3 days, two or more teachers and/or students from any of their classes are diagnosed with influenza A, the student should stay at home and monitor his/her health condition for 5 days.

5. If an instructor is diagnosed with influenza A and stops coming to class, the department chair can appoint other instructors to substitute for his/her classes; or the university can announce that the classes be postponed with instructor deciding whether or not to make up for missing classes after they resume to work.

6. Students should ask for sick leaves after being diagnosed with influenza A or when staying at home in compliance with Guideline 4 above. The university will count the student’s absences as official leave. If the student needs to take a make-up exam due to such sick leave, no penalty will be charged concerning grade marking.

7. These guidelines have been passed by the Administrative Meeting and are effective starting on the day of their announcement.
